SCOAN to face trial on the 18th February

The September 12th building collapse killed 115 people

The September 12th building collapse killed 115 people

On February the 8th, SCOAN’s latest attempt to pervert the cause of justice was put to rest and the date was set for the trial of the SCOAN trustees and the engineers.

It is surprising the amount of energy and money SCOAN have spent in order to try and bury this case. The charge expected to be brought against them is one count of building without approval, for which they may have to pay a small fine. It’s the engineers who will suffer the major consequences if found guilty of 110 counts of involuntary manslaughter. It would appear to be going in SCOAN’s favour, they get a slap on the wrist for not completing the right paperwork, the engineers get a prison sentence. They have the perfect fall guy. However, if it’s as simple as this, why are they spending so much money on top flight lawyers to avoid a ~$1000 fine? Two possibilities come to mind 1) they know that they are ultimately responsible, for example they instructed the contractor to build on the cheap and they know the truth will come out, or 2) they just can’t allow a situation to arise where their “infallible” general overseer is found by a court of law to be in the wrong, even if it’s for a relatively “trivial” reason.

Whatever their reasoning, it is good to see the court case finally moving forward. The one fact nobody is disputing is that at least 115 people lost their lives on September 12th 2014. Their families deserve justice, and they deserve the truth. TB Joshua and SCOAN have not been helping this process with their constant attempts to exploit loopholes in the law to shut down proceedings, or their attempts to sway public opinion by presenting “evidence” on youtube while snubbing court summons. It is about time a heavy hand was used against them to bring closure to this tragedy.

For those who still believe in the SCOAN stories of a mystery airplane or terrorist attack, we remind you that these theories were covered and dismissed in the coroner’s report. The cause of the collapse was very clear based on extensive evidence provided by 3 independent engineering agencies. Their conclusion was the building was so structurally deficient a collapse was inevitable. Some of the issues they highlighted include:

  • Inadequate beams of 750mm by 225mm (should have been 900mm by 300mm)
  • Inadequately reinforced columns (should have been reinforced with 12 x Y25 bars or 20 x Y20mm bars. Instead they used 10 x Y20 bars (as seen in the video released by SCOAN).
  • Inadequate bearing pressure for the central column due to the 2m x 2m x 0.9m foundations.
  • Failure to introduce rigid zones for bracing the structure and did not design the frames as an unbraced structure.
  • Failure to provide movement joints that could have absorbed any movement due to creep, contraction, expansion and differential settlement etc..
  • 8 out of the 12 main beams of the structure failed because they were undersized, under-reinforced (both in tension and shear), the tension bars were poorly anchored to the column supports and 8 x Y20 was used instead of 14 x Y20.
  • The ground floor columns were slender and readily gave in to buckling

Reading the full report leaves do doubt in the readers mind that the building was unsafe. This makes it even more shocking that SCOAN would try so hard to counteract the plain truth. Whatever happened to the 9th commandment “You shall not bear false witness”?

  1. so whose fault is it here Mr/Ms tb joshua watch? the construction company or tb joshua and scoan??myself i think scoan/tbjoshua got nothing to be blamed about,he is prophet not a constructor

    • @Mist,

Ofcourse it would be the fault of SCOAN and TB Joshua. It’s done illegally and without building permit. The law is not allowing this because it is for the protection of the citizens.

Also God did not command TB Joshua to do it illegally. Which God tells you to do things illegally ? Is it the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob ? Or is it Satan ? And wicked people who have no regard for people’s lives ? Did TB Joshua and staff sign the contract or what ? To agree with it to do it illegally ? Are you telling me he and the staff did not know ? Are you telling us that ? Do you understand the term manslaughter out of negligence ? How about gelling people God showed it to u and you did nothing about it ? TB Joshua made no phone call nor any effort to save a life but just closed his eyes and let it happen, just like him saying oh today it’s the last time I speak over this microphone and the next day the audio/video room burns down in the Auditorium. Then telling people he knew because his god told him. So why not shut all electricity down in the audio/video room and find the problem ? No, it had to burn down so they can ask the sheeple followers for money to get new stuff !!!! And so they ate full of this trickery. Deceiving you and don’t allow you to question anything.

    • @Mist
Good question. You’re correct that TB Joshua is not a contractor or engineer, it might be entirely the contractor’s fault – but that doesn’t let SCOAN off the hook. If they had gone through the correct process of obtaining approval (a legal requirement for public buildings) there would have been an inspection, and the shoddy workmanship would have been spotted. If it wasn’t and the building collapsed, it would be the building inspectors fingered instead of SCOAN. So if SCOAN had gone about things correctly, these 115 lives would have been saved. So yes, SCOAN do bear a large amount of the responsibility.

It’s also possible that they intentionally employed dodgy contractors and instructed them to build it on a budget that only allowed for shoddy workmanship. If this was the case you can be sure the contractors will show evidence of it when the trial starts, as it will deflect responsibility back to SCOAN.

  2. I read that if the engineers are found guilty that they have to stand guilty and will be by death by hanging. So another people have to die because of the recklessness of people’s choices. And blood has to be shed because TB Joshua and staff agreed to do this illegal building. Which he likes so much to appease his god he serves. He is the only pastor in the world besides Jim Jones who has allowed so many people to die under his care. He really does not care because on Sundays he is just laughing and jesting about how great he is with his preaching and brainwasing his crowd by standing very close to them as if he care a lot about his fanatic cursing followers to anyone that touches their idol TBJ. All he cares how to move his agenda forward at the expense of many so he can come out trump with the Name of Jesus attached to it.

      • What is he prophesying ? Death, chaos, planes falling down, football matches, economic matters that everybody already knows, shootings, rockets that North Korea does nearly every year and videos are on YouTube already saying g it. And nothing changes about them. North Korea still did the rocket. Is there a purpose of these useless prophesies ?

  3. Thinking about it
If the engineers sanctioned shoddiness for whatever reason, they are not escaping liability. TB Joshua will walk. He will feign innocence in the matter but there is no way you can divorce shoddy workmanship from cutting corners. A contractor had zero incentive to use substandard material since the cost is borne by the owner.

Look at this 17-storey high rise that collapsed last week in Taiwan following a light earthquake. It had tin cans in the pillars.

There are good reasons they are going for the owner before they get to the engineers

    • @vooke
I think there are incentives to the contractor. By cutting corners they can win the tender by quoting a substantially lower price, or they can increase their profit margin. Nearly all the structural issues were down to insufficient or inadequate steel reinforcement. If they priced it up using proper materials, but cut corners on what they actually did, they would pocket a lot of extra change. Where SCOAN definitely hold responsibility is their failure to get the building inspected and approved, whether their involvement goes deeper than that, we’ll have to wait and see.

      • @tbjoshuawatch,
How it works here is the contractor is enlisted and once there they draft the bill of quantities (BQ) showing the cost breakdown. A contractor is not hired on the basis of the BQ as they don’t tender based on the cost of the building but rather the cost of their services and experience. At most what a contractor can do is to steal construction material or buy substandard ones and get kickbacks from the suppliers.

All these are quite unlikely. The most likely is that the owner, bearing the full cost, attempts to cut corners by buying substandard materials. If the contractors play along with this foolishness, they are as culpable especially if the owner sourced for the materials through them.

      • @vooke
Interesting, thanks for the information. So who compiles the BQ? Does the owner approach contractors with a ready prepared BQ, or does each contractor tender their own BQ for the owner to chose from?

  4. I do believe there is more to this story than meets the eye. These engineers seems to have gotten very good lawyers on their side to help them fight the case. This plus the fact when the coroner inquest started they could not even locate them seems to suggest maybe the engineers are just scapegoats. I have visited SCOAN many times and have noticed that nothing goes on at there without the explicit permission of tb joshua. Hence to protect the engineers would be to protect evidence of this chain of command which can be damaging for SCOAN.

Even if this does not bring down SCOAN I believe that they will not get far. Organizations such as these feed on people’s fears. Many have come and gone and they will be many more to come. It’s a terrible circle. We only have ourselves to blame. In saying that, tb joshua watch I commend your valiant effort in the face of some strong critics and threats. It takes massive balls to stand up and speak. Coffee is on me.

  5. I second you Icarus

How funny that the very Sunday following the building collapse (on Friday), while people were still dying under the rubble, TBJ did not find it fit to go pray for them or lay hands and command the rubble to open up for the trapped to come out, since he carries the power for extraordinary miracles. Instead, he went on and had a full service, laying hands on people who were in no danger whatsoever in preference to those that were dying. Jesus operates in funny manners at SCOAN.

    • @Sheba,
Excellent point. The best place to show off his healing powers would have been praying for the injured survivors who had enough faith in him to visit SCOAN from all over.

I wont be surprised if nobody is jailed for this while in Taiwan a few will lose their heads over the collapsed highrise the earthquake notwithstanding.

  6. @Vooke

The fact that this case commands international attention may lead Nigeria to act differently than usal, if usal is without doubt always below (international) standard.

During the Coroner’s investigation, to my knowledge, the RSA Government had appointed lawyers who followed the case closely to the end. If nothing has changed, they could be following the criminal case as closely as they did the coroner investigation (Afterall, why engage legal counsel to follow the coroner’s investigation and once a factual report is issued, abandon everything?). RSA did spend a lot of money to take care of its people and to repatriate them following the accident.

Also, let us forget not that in this case, it is highly probable that God really wants to expose and shame the devil. If that’s the case, then I will urge you all to sit comfortably and watch. There’s a beginning and an end to everything. At times the end itself comes with a beginning, a full process, then a full stop. WATCH THE SPACE!
