TB Joshua sends his pointless but deadly anointed water to London

Only months since several people lost their lives in a futile attempt to get their hands on TB Joshua’s anointed water at SCOAN Ghana, TB Joshua is sending his water to London for a special anointed water service, the Christian Post reports.

This anointed water is the third version of the product (and we use the word “product” deliberately, SCOAN’s claims that it is not “sold” are extremely dubious). The previous version of the anointed water was blasphemously labeled “for the salvation of your soul“, the third version took the blasphemy to new heights by calling it “the blood of Jesus“.

The most incredible thing is, since the release of Anointed Water 3.0, TB Joshua actually admitted that it is pointless (at least if you followed his statement to its logical conclusion). Apparently TB Joshua is just providing you with water (and not even enough to drink), the anointing is from God. Therefore, unless TB Joshua has a monopoly on God, you’re getting nothing more than what you could get from your tap.

For the poor Ghanians who went looking for breakthrough from this water, it proved worse than pointless, it was deadly. Four lost their lives (the “anointing” in the water didn’t help them with that), and many were injured (why didn’t the “anointing” in the water protect them, or at the very least heal them?).

People of London, you have very easy access to water. If you believe God is going to use water as a means to your blessing, then get it from the nearest tap, don’t waste your time, energy, hope and money waiting for these little packets of water.

4 dead, many injured at SCOAN Ghana. This anointed water nonsense must stop!

Update: Now the BBC are reporting on the story too (now one of the most read stories on the site)
Update 2: The police have now banned SCOAN from holding meetings in their Spintex venue.

TB Joshua has just released version 3.0 of his anointed water packaging. The packaging for anointed water 2.0 boldly claimed that it was “for the salvation of your soul“. Presumably since the release of 2.0 someone explained to TB Joshua that only the blood of Jesus could provide salvation, so incredibly for version 3.0 he labels his anointed water “the blood of Jesus“. You can’t make this stuff up.

Sadly, all the hysteria about the new, upgraded anointed water packaging turned to tragedy on Sunday when a stampede happened at SCOAN Ghana. 4 people were killed and many others injured, according to a police officer at the scene “15 people who were seriously injured, some with broken limbs, many others collapsed but were resuscitated.” (source)

An example of the confusion the anointed water causes

An example of the confusion the anointed water causes

This crush happened because desperate people sincerely believed that the solution to their problems lay in a little bottle of water. Why do they believe this? Because TB Joshua has told them. In a video accompanying the release of the new packaging TB Joshua claims that the water is the solution to your business problems, marital issues, financial constraints, sicknesses and other such issues.

Is there a biblical basis for these claims?

The SCOAN website says there is:

Throughout the Scriptures, we see clear proof that God can use any medium to express Himself:

  • In Acts 19:11-12, God used the medium of Paul’s handkerchief and aprons to heal the sick.
  • In Exodus 14:16, God used the medium of Moses’ staff to split the Red Sea.
  • In Acts 3:6, God used the voice of His servants, Peter and John to raise a crippled man.
  • In 2 Kings 5:14, God used the medium of a dirty river to heal Namaan.
  • In Acts 2:1-2, God expressed Himself through the medium of sound at the time of Pentecost
  • In 1 Samuel 17:49, God used David’s catapult to defeat the giant Goliath.
  • In John 9:6-7, Jesus used mud and saliva to heal a blind man.
  • In Acts 4:15-16, God used the medium of Peter’s shadow to heal the sick.

But did David start producing anointed catapults? Did Peter start renting out his shadow? Did some enterprising disciple start distributing anointed mud and saliva? No! God spontaneously used these mediums to express himself, but there is zero evidence of a particular medium ever becoming a pattern.

This anointed water is billed as TB Joshua’s anointed water. People believe it is through this medium their breakthrough will come because the water “connects” them to TB Joshua and his anointing. This is has nothing to do with the Christian faith. Christians believe that all mankind is fallen and needs redemption through the blood of Jesus, but that redemption is available to all directly – no man of God, priest or intercessor required.

Perhaps, like Peters miraculous escape from prison God will also miraculously grant you breakthrough in an area of suffering, or maybe like James (who was execulted) your breakthrough will come beyond the grave. Maybe your healing will come instantly, or maybe like the great Apostle Paul you will be tormented in your weakness, but through it you will learn that His grace is sufficient for you, His power is made perfect in weakness (2 Cor 12:9).

Four people are dead because they desperately wanted this anointed water. Many others are alleged to have died after naively putting their trust in a little bottle of tap water instead of the medication trained doctors had prescribed.

Don’t put your hope in this water, don’t put your hope in a man who sets himself up as a false christ. We encourage you to pray for those who have lost loved ones, and pray that this deception ends swiftly.

If you’re still not convinced, ask yourself the following questions:

  1. If TB Joshua is a prophet with the track record of predicting disasters that he claims, why didn’t he predict this one?

  2. If the anointed water has miraculous healing powers, why did the SCOAN branch in Ghana not bring it out to heal those injured, or to raise the dead back to life?

  3. If you believe that Jesus is the healer, not TB Joshua – what is the point in this water?

What is SCOAN?

SCOAN London, AIDS deaths

SCOAN London

SCOAN is the Synagogue Church of All Nations. The headquarters is based in Lagos, Nigeria, but the branch in question is the London one. This branch is run by a team of evangelists under the direct oversight of TB Joshua in Nigeria. It is a registered charity (at least until the charities commission read the BBC article) and it currently meets at Bexleyheath Academy every Sunday at 11am (at least until they catch wind of what goes on at their premises). You can read more about them on their website: http://scoanlondon.wordpress.com/

Who is TB Joshua?

TB Joshua

TB Joshua

TB Joshua is a controversial Nigerian pastor and prophet. He has a huge following within Nigeria, and a fast growing one internationally (mainly through his satellite TV channel Emmanuel TV). Below we have summarised some of the most concerning issues about him.

1. Numerous allegations of sexual abuse

For a number of years there have been an increasing number of allegations made about TB Joshua sexually abusing young girls at his church. The church has never investigated or addressed these serious allegations.
Read more about this on the following pages:

2. Dubious claims of divine healing

Anointing Water

Anointing Water

Besides the deaths reported in a piece recently broadcast on the BBC, the authors of this site are aware of 4 other deaths under similar circumstances (not AIDS, but where they were told to stop medication and subsequently died). In 2005, after a large crusade at Botswanan National stadium, President Festus Mogae released a statement urging patients who had visited TB Joshua for healing, including those on the antiretroviral (ARV) therapy, to continue taking their medication. The fact the president had to take this unusual step lends enormous credence to this BBC story.

We recently told the story of Judith, a lady suffering from diabetes who was told by TB Joshua that she was healed, and to stop taking her medication. 2 days later she was in a coma. The comments on the story from SCOAN supporters were revealing. Rather than denying the truthfulness of her story they scolded her for the lack of faith that got her into this almost deadly predicament.

Sky News have conducted an undercover report which confirms the suspicions the BBC article raised, yes SCOAN does tell AIDS victims to quit their medication.

One reliable source we have spoken to tells us that of all those who have allegedly been healed of AIDS (i.e. they have had it medically verified), every single one is Nigerian. This does not represent the diversity of people who come to him for healing, but given the extent of corruption in Nigeria, it doesn’t take much to join the dots here. Previous supporters of TB Joshua have spoken out on this site about some of the trickery used in the portrayal of these so called “miracles”.
As mentioned in a recent BBC article, he widely distributes his special brand of “anointing water” which they claim is for “good health and breakthrough in all areas of your life and for the salvation of your soul“. Most Christians will instantly realise what a blasphemous claim the final part of that statement is! SCOAN adamently state that it is free, but this seems to be a misleading statement. It’s free in that it doesn’t have a price tag on it, but you don’t get it for nothing. Ex disciple Gareth explains more in this comment.

3. Cult like behaviour

A previous article on this site compared testimonies of past TB Joshua disciples with the 14 cult identifying criteria compiled by the International Cultic Studies Association. Not suprisingly, they closely match every single criteria.

4. Blackmail and video confessions

Like the Scientologists, SCOAN record video confessions of most new disciples and even visitors to the church. These thousands of videos are kept on archive as future blackmail material should any of their supporters turn against them. They have already attempted to blackmail this site on one occasion. If this isn’t evidence of them having something sinister to hide, we don’t know what is!

5. $10-$15 million of personal wealth

This Nigerian leader of a British registered charity has amassed a colossal fortune for himself. Forbes magazine rank him as the 3rd richest pastor in Nigeria. In the comments section of our article on this, ex disciple Gareth has some extremely insightful comments about how TB Joshua has become so rich:

6. Children at his church sing songs of worship about him

A Channel Four film crew captured a sunday school choir singing a song at SCOAN in Lagos. The words went like this:
The Synagogue Church is a training ground,
where the holy spirit is flowing
through his anointed servant TB Joshua
The Man of God
Everything about it is part of our lives
Everything about him is good
Our post on the video (particularly note how his supporters try to justify the video!)

7. His words are considered infallible

He teaches that as a “man of God”, all his words are the infallible words of God. Not suprisingly this leads to some extremely strange beliefs amongst his followers. Some believe that future generations will be reading TB Joshua’s words in the way todays generation of Christians read the bible.

8. He uses tragic events for self promotion

Regularly SCOAN release videos claiming that TB Joshua predicted a major world event before it happened. It’s difficult to see what the purpose is in this, considering the predictions are always too vague to be useful. Events he claims to have predicted include:
