In our last few posts we have focused on TB Joshua’s anointed water, particularly since the tragic death of 4 people in Ghana desperately trying to get these little packets of water.

A point raised several times in the comments is if the anointed water is fake, how is it so effective on hundreds of people? In this post we will consider 3 possible reasons for this apparent disparity.

1) Over-hype

That the anointed water is over-hyped is a fact, one that sadly left 4 people dead. When people claim the incredible potency of the anointed water, you should first ask what their source is? Most likely Emmanuel TV. In that case we know they systematically engage in deception in their portrayal of both prophecies and healing. How can a few minutes on Emmanuel TV be proof that this water causes marriages to be restored, or people to be delivered from psychological conditions? What state are these people in now?

2) Placebo

It is well known that the brain has a hugely important role in a persons physical health. Researchers routinely take advantage of this by using placebos, inert drugs or procedures that the patient believes will make them better. It is well known that this belief that something will make you better is in fact surprisingly effective, even with physical ailments. People who take the anointed water have a huge amount of faith that it will work for them (again, hence the deaths) – therefore it is almost certain that the placebo effect plays a role.

3) It’s real, but….

Maybe in some cases people really are healed or “delivered” through the administration of this water. Does this bring our assertions tumbling down? No, because the bible is clear that it is not only genuine Christian ministers who can do signs and wonders. Most notably the false prophets and messiahs prophecied by Jesus in Matthew 24:24 do “great signs and wonders”. You could also consider Pharaoh’s wise men and sorcerers who performed very impressive signs and wonders in Exodus 7. If you assume TB Joshua is real and the anointed water is of God on the basis of what you perceive to be genuine miracles, then presumably you would also accept that Reiki healers are of God? Or new age healers? Or spiritual healers? Or Traditional healers? All of these, as with TB Joshua, have followers who claim to have been genuinely healed by them. It is abundantly clear from scripture that the appearance of a miraculous sign is not enough to validate a ministry. You have to look beyond the surface, and this is where the picture becomes very clear with the anointed water.

Not only is the anointed water blasphemously called a means of salvation (version 2.0) or even worse “The blood of Jesus” (version 3.0), it sets up TB Joshua as a false christ by leading people to believe that he holds the key (a little packet of water) to their healing, deliverance or even salvation. It appears that even TB Joshua knows this since he recently declared that the only part he played in the process was providing the water, which begs the question why get the water from him?

In conclusion, regardless of whether the apparent effectiveness of the anointed water is hype, the placebo effect or real (almost certainly there are cases of all three) the teaching around it leaves us with no doubt that it is unbiblical, unchristian and ultimately damaging to those who put their hope in it.

  1. All excellent points. I am absolutely sure that hype and inflation account for many of these miracles. The various “miracle babies” pinged my radar because I have been through several situations they describe and there is no special miracle there. Just the miracle of God’s creation and how he made our bodies to work. Breech babies turning late in pregnancy is not miraculous. Its a statistical probability. So, in fact, is a safe birth even for most “high risk” pregnancies. Tbj is quite safe predicting safe deliveries. Also safe predicting pregnancies, as long as he doesn’t put a short timeline on it. Again, its all about statistics.

    Theres also the mytholigizing of some stories (it made a whole bus bulletproof! ) and the repetition of other stories with just minor changes, giving the impression that more miracles happen than really do.

    It is a placebo effect.

    It is well known that when excitement is riled and frenzied up, it can cause a high peak in releasing Enkephalins and Endorphins in the body which in many cases removes pain, imaginary problems, releases healing properties that can be temporarily or even indefinite. Which they claim is the Holy Spirit. (that is all they know, these two words, not of Who He is and what His attributes are and how Souvereign He is and only does God’s will and always points towards Jesus and not any mortal man)

    The placebo effect and the temporal variability of pain in any painful disease work together to produce a powerful illusion that a faith healer or a quack has effected a ‘cure’ by using diverse deceptive tactics to create an illusion for the participants.

    One woman who we were very close to, suffering from lung cancer, so wanted to believe that she was cured [by Benny Hinn] that she never saw her oncologist again. Only to hear about her death later on from her family.

    Another example. When the 7-month-old became irritable with diarrhea and lost his appetite, his parents, Catherine and Herbert Schaible, prayed again.

    When Brandon had trouble breathing and gasped for air, his parents called a pastor. This, in spite of the fact that a judge had ordered them to call a doctor.

    Brandon Schaible died on April 18 from bacterial pneumonia, dehydration and strep, according to the district attorney’s office. All treatable with antibiotics.

    I believe in miracles and I believe in deliverance, but I believe also God uses doctors.

    The belief and trickery of frenzying people in crowds in making the hype so high in “anointed” water it releases hyper infusions of those Enkephalins and Endorphins and many times just hypochondria. Not even to think about high possibility that there are spirits in this waters that enter into them and create a crazy display which is passed off as Holy Spirit again.

    Hypochondria is Chronic and abnormal anxiety about imaginary symptoms and ailments. Doctors love to write medication for patients.

    So we see all kinds of people with pills and paperwork going to Lagos, in the Branches, taking their tablets in front of the camera then just before that they are prayed for they are hyped up with videos, stir up beliefs, coins, handkerchiefs, oil, wristband, water, sticks, salt, anything you can make gullible people all frenzied up about in believing that anything the Jim Jones’ are saying and just do things simply head over heels without thinking (passed off as faith), hence the many dead, hurt, and have broken legs from stampede’s. No words can express how awful and despicable this all is. But in SCOAN they have just a humongous thick steel plate in front of their head and can never admit how disastrous it all was in the end and will be.

      I find it *very* interesting in the international visitor’s section of SCOAN webpage that not only must you give every detail of your health and life situation, plus family phone numbers (to verify? gather more information?) but they also state that if you get off the plane and can tell that your health situation is different from described, or has apparently changed, you will be sent packing, essentially.

      The God I know is not hindered by even the worst disease, if healing is his will. When Jesus recieved news of Lazarus, the man was sick. When Jesus arrived at his home, the man was dead. Major change in health circumstances. And yet Jesus raised him right up again. The “god of TB Joshua” apparently is limited and needs his servants to practice strict control and manipulation in order to get his “stunning” results.

    • God has given us his words in the bible to judge people like TB Joshua. If what he does is against God’s word in the bible, should we stay silent?

    • Such words come from lazy believers who refuse to do their homework. We were instructed to test spirits. It is OUR job to judge a prophet according to scripture as tbjoshuawatch said.

    Jesus said;

    “That the false prophets of the last days, will be able to do great miracles in his Name and drive out demons in his Name and prophecy in his Name, but they will NOT be from Him, Jesus! He does not know them, because they are workers of iniquity!”

    They will be working miracles through the water, stickers, wrist bands etc. etc.

    Again I remind you, that the Bible says; “To look at the fruit of a person’s life and NOT the miracles.

    Or the prophecies or the driving out of demons!

    Don’t forget.

    Ask Him through fastings and prayers to show you how He sees tbj?
    And be prepared to listen to the Lord!
    Do not believe us, go and check tbj out for yourselves.

How far can this blog go? or what’s your point..for over 24yrs of the synagogue and the ministry still wax stronger…our reason of going to church is to proclaim “christ in you,the hope of glory”…everybody can call the name jesus but not all can bring jesus to the scene…80% of people who attend the synagogue ‘re not members of the church…or ‘re you trying to say that thousands of people who worship at the synagogue ‘re fools and you ‘re the wiseone…even if the man of God is wrong two wrongs can’t make a right…Mr author be CAREFUL!     • Donald, you should read your Bible rather than just spouting catch phrases. :/ Major issue Number 1: Questioning TBJ is not blasphemy. TBJ is not God. He is not the Holy Spirit. It is not possible to blaspheme against him because of this. He is a man. Period.

      Can thousands of people be deceived? Absolutely. Jim Jones had a vibrant, growing church. He received recognition from church leaders and social leaders and politicians for his civil rights activism and his care for the elderly.

      Then, he killed close to a thousand people by leading them into group suicide, including forcing them to murder their own children, and his body guards participated in a bloody gun battle that killed several who were trying to leave the group.

      So, I will not call them fools. But I can say categorically that it is absolutely possible for thousands of well-meaning, God-loving, seriously seeking people to be deceived. See Matthew 24. As it happens, this belief lines up with the words of Jesus. And I take the words of Jesus far more seriously than the words of TBJ.

    Someone should go for his birthday and confront him with his lying and greed for self worship and money.

    This is his last confession from last Sunday.

    He is frantically recuperating the money invested in the “anointing water” and to pay off the fallen and hurt in Accra, Ghana. He has no shame. Telling gullible people it is for the poor. Let him go around the church in the neighbourhood. He only good road there is next to the church, the rest is dirt and pothole roads and gravel. Also the drains are still open for people to get open sores when they cut their legs and feet, because of no shoes.

  15. People exercise thier faith in our Lord Jesus Christ believing He’ll heal and deliver them true the annionting water and you call it the placebo effect. No matter the level of euphoric hormones secreted, there are some things that just cant happen without God’s intervention and one of such is the day you will realize you have not been wise to go against a Prophet of God.

      If it is not that as you claim, then certainly it is II Thessalonians 2 whole chapter.

      I have noticed no-one has been disputing this when I put up this Scripture as proof that this is SCOAN. All the hallmarks are there indisputable.

      It is ignored by everyone inside SCOAN and it’s followers. Especially verse 11 and 12.

      Then… Not even to start talking about what is said in Matthew 7.

      How clear it is about the bragadociousness of promoting this “ministry” at all costs. Many dead now, many injured, broken leg and much more. Clearly a proof that God was not in it. They even tell crap like that the dead are all saved because of the “anointing water”. Just a note about that to know they did not even have the “anointed water” in their possession.

      Now how corrupted can you be to purport this kind of heresy from the highest shelf and that rooted in deceiving gullible people to swallow that to justify their despicable acts.

      Never a Shepherd than Jesus Christ, He will never let you get lost when He got you in His Hands. All others are wolves in sheep’s clothing. One day you will understand, I pray.

  16. @jesse since u claim tb joshua is not a God how then can we recognise a true one? 2ndly r u claiming d devil is more powerful than God? cos u attribute all tb joshua’s work in christ to d devil. if not mention true men of God u know with outstanding mircale in our time who has not been tied to d devil. an open challenge is d best way to prove d truth to d whole world. get really men of God together vs tb joshua get sick ppl from various hospital n pray for them.

      Minister of the Lord who is above reproach in morality, integrity, and faithfulness? Billy Graham. And I could name many others who, because they are tirelessly working for the Lord and not wasting time and donated money on self promotion, do mot get their names publicized.

No wonder he does not respond to my posts that I did sent him. I even called him at his home number and he does not answer there than with an answering machine. Clever man. They are all crooks, scammers, deceivers and thieves.

    • Jesse, you can certainly monetize youtube channels and blogs via ad content. I am not sure of the exact details, but it has something to do with the number of click throughs the ads get. So someone posting gazillions of youtube videos, if they’ve monetized their channel with ads, could well be making a pretty decent residual income. I’m not sure if youtube has some other mechanism for earning, as far as page views on actual youtube pages.

      And lest anyone jump on this as “proof” that this blog gets money somehow, take note that it is *not* monetized–you see no ads in the sidebars, nothing but internal links and the facebook page.

A well known trick of SCOAN and branches to get more gullible customers to extract money from them. Why not stop him spreading lies and fake deliverances and other filth. I am working on it.         Are you anywhere near to him ? If you are you should call him and ask him what excuse he has to profit from clips of TB Joshua, or report him to the local authorities.

        I am trying to get hold on him, many times now, but he seems to be always outside reading his Bible out loud somewhere in Lonesome Lake in Franconia, New Hampshire. I don’t have a problem that he reads his bible, but I against promoting SCOAN and making money out of it.

    • there is no comparison that is valid about the way in which people treated Jesus and the way in which people treated this man who you call a man of God. I frequently am ashamed to tell people that members of my family have behaved in very unloving ways since they have been involved with this man. In contrast I can happily talk about how people have been transformed by the love of Jesus.

      • How strangely that experiences can differ, used to be a Christ rebel, havent gone home for 10+ years. Just a trip costing about $20 dollars from where I am. After a tbj experience, am a new person closer to Christ, called upon some family to stay with me, started a community development project…..love all around.
        Isnt it maybe becoz you are so devotedly against tbj you reject anything connected to him including your family, making you blind to even see the love they might be showing to you? introspect!

  21. i just want to ask some questions. have you guys collected the water for use and for any reason but to castigate? i still wonder the kind of heart you guys have, definately you live simply because of TBJ. please look deep you will see that the SCOAN is the ONLY church in Nigeria that dwells on LOVE and Christ is LOVE. TBJ is such a humble man as far im concerned and by just observing both ends he is more Christ like than you guys. can you please use your energy for something that will uplift humanity? have you studied other Churches especially the RICH Churches and compared with SCOAN? or you just derive pleasure in trying to smear TBJ?

      If you want to see love, please turn to 1 Corinthians 13 and find that promoting relentlessly fake deliverances, showman ship, allowing people to die and hurt in stampedes or broken legs is no love. That’s about yourself being in the picture of using the “medium” “anointed water” as a means to create your notoriety. Why did Jesus not do such thing in His time. Why did He not bless water and told the disciples to carry it around all Israel and Egypt, Jordan and Syria ?

      Any Idea why Jesus was walking all over Israel? Why is it that TB Joshua cannot go everywhere himself and demonstrate it Market places, Catholic churches, At lake Como in Italy, bless it and let everyone drink out of it, or to Lake Superior in the US, lots of water there, Lake Baikal, Russia, Lake Vostoc, Antartica, Lake Malawi, Lake Mweru, Lake Quinhai, China, Lake Urmia, Iran. Why not ? Oh wait, all of sudden it would not work. We all know that ! If you claim that God can bless any medium, plenty water there. For all the people to attend to. All you have to do is go there and do your “wulu wulu” and prove that you serve the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

    This is just his old trickspackaged in a new bottle. Notice the connection between him and the Vatican ( vatican meaning – the devining serpent) ?

    First of all, the late president of Ghana, J. A. Mills, drank millions of gallons of this water, which was specially packaged with TBJ’s ” anointing,” and was delivered through diplomatic pouch, yet he died of his illness. What it means is that this water is not a panacea for sickness, let alone eliminate poverty and make people rich. There are still 1000’s of poor people at SCOAN who don’t have money and cannot even afford transportation to church !
    We have a heart for the multitudes who are being deceived daily by TBJ, who claims to be the “expected messiah,” and we want to warn them, but the choice is up to them. And don’t be deceived, there is no love at SCOAN at all, but strife and dissension. Though TBJ likes to talk about the fruit of the Spirit, he has no love in his heart, but the desire to proclaim himself messiah, in place of Jesus Christ who suffered and died on the cross for all mankind. TBJ may appear humble to you, but don’t let his appearance fool you, for God looks at the heart. 1 Samuel 16:7.
    And by the way, have you now believed the gospel and accepted Jesus as Lord and Saviour or do you still belong to the Grail cult, which was founded by Abd Ru Shin, another false prophet ?

      If you have accepted JESUS CHRIST as your Lord and Saviour it does not show in the way you commented above as your reasonings are purely judgemental.Mathew 13: 24-42 check what our Lord Jesus said to discerning persons like you. A Spiritual person need to read all claims and holy books so as to gain the TRUE knowledge of God. Religion is for the docile minds while Worship of God is for the active mind, that is why i have read most religious books including the grail message (you called it Grail Cult just to derogate it). The grail message taught me to keep the bottom of my heart PURE, taught me about PURITY, made me to understand the meaning of the TRINITY and the true value of the Blood and Flesh (the comminion), made me Understand WHY CHRIST came and the purpose for my earthly life. Other books have revealed GOD to me and I have PEACE of mind that is why i would not judge any one. STOP MOCKING GOD WITH THESE FRIVOLOUS COMMENTS.

    Warning.
    We have also received truckloads of that water. Some people got helped, some not, but it is not Biblical again. Unbiblical ways will be used to perform miracles by these false prophets of the last days.
    Before my eyes were opened, I could not see why it is wrong. The Bible warns in different places not to add to or subtract from the Word of God.
    Nowhere in the Bible where God used a medium like water, to work through, did it end up in mass productions.
    The only medium God allows to be used repeatedly is the oil.
    And not anointed oil, at that, plain oil. And the leaders in the church must use it on their members that they know, so that they can help them get healed and in their walk with God. It is a one on one situation.

    The ‘anointed’ water and oil, being sent out can go anywhere and to anyone – eg. Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists etc, etc. There is no control over who is using it.

    You do not have to repent of your unbelief in Jesus Christ as the Son of God or the Lamb of God, who was slain on the cross of Calvary, died and rose again for the salvation of your repented sins, or gets baptized in water afterwards or receives the Holy Spirit. Leave alone obeying the Word of God and His commandments.

    It is used as a charm these days!

    Beware; the deceptions of our days are very, very subtle. Just off the Bible. Just like satan quoted the Word of God to Jesus in the wilderness!

    Like many I have been wondering: “Why tbj’s disciples, who have been with him for many years, are only now receiving their deliverances, for everyone to view on Emman TV?”

    Now I understand that this is just one of his tricks. Since many of his ex-disciples are now speaking out, about life as a disciple in scoan and what is really going on there, behind the scenes.

    The reason is, because he wants to create an impression, that all his disciples, especially those who woke up to his deceptions and are speaking out again him, are all demon possessed.

    So this just shows how sick he really is.

    That he can parade his disciples around on TV, in order to make him seem innocent, while they believe that they have received a real deliverance.

    So these deliverances are only for his own gain and have nothing to do with setting them free.

    Through this, he plays his cards in such a way, as to shine his own image and influence his disciples to even be more loyal to him and who knows with what powers he is doing this?

Recently we were informed about several Churches founded with ‘Funny’ names, some in room and parlor, some in a single room shop, some diabolic, some purely to dupe, etc. In most Churches visitors receive their blessings faster than Members remember Jesus was never respected by His own people. The only thing I see on the Blog is to just ridicle TBJ which ever way, however I am glad to inform you that this Blog has only succeeded in showing how some people deal with idleness through mental laziness.

    • So where do you believe that the anointing being expressed through the water come from?
      I can give examples of lives being changed by SCOAN. Families grieving, relationships broken, Christian faith being questioned. I do not believe that those changes come from God.

  39. God can use any medium to heal and Prophet T.B. Joshua does not use only annionted water to heal. He uses other mediums like prayer and people even by touching the T.V. screen while praying with him are healed etc. So why are people thinking that because of annionted water he is an Anti-Christ. The argument at stake presuppose that with God nobody can heal but with the devil you can heal. Is that right? Prophet T.B. Joshua is a genuine prophet of the time because he is humble, loving,not materialistic, not racist, and he seem to have all the fruits of the Spirit and none of the fruits of the flesh as indicated in Galatians 5:19-25. I see his critics by their words exhibiting the words of the flesh (Galatians 5:19-21).

So you deliberately disagree and put us down with the facts in these Scriptures in which we all believe in thoroughly and sincerely and that they shall have it’s workings and manifestation in us through His Spirit and Faith ?   43. Not even the issue of faith. With or without faith, miracles and wonders of God must continue. When God divided the red sea, not all had the faith. TB Joshua is a Major prophet. People who blasphemed him are right now confessing and bowing before him for forgiveness and deliverance, mainly pastors.
